15년 전만 해도 필리핀에서는 K-pop 앨범과 공식 굿즈를 찾아보기 어려웠다. 나 같은 2세대 K-pop 팬으로서 2세대 K-Pop 굿즈를 (한국에 와서 직접) 접하는 것은 꿈이 이루어지는 일이다. 나는 한국에 처음 왔을 때 버킷리스트를 만들었다. 나의 버킷리스트 중 하나는 슈퍼주니어의 모든 앨범과 굿즈를 모으는 것이다. 2005년 데뷔한 슈퍼주니어의 모든 상품을 추적해야 한다는 뜻이다. 과연 그게 될까 싶겠지만, 나는 모험을 할 준비가 되어 있다.

서울의 명동 곳곳을 다니면서 나는 물건을 사고파는 앱인 번개장터(번장)과 Karrot을 알게 되었다. 네이버 중고나라도 소개받았다. 아들 세 가지는 특히 기본적인 한국어 의사 소통 능력이 있는 나와 같은 사람에게는 놀라운 온라인 장터이다. 내가 찾던 모든 K-pop 굿즈가 거기 있었다! K-pop 아이템 말고도 멋진 도구나 명품, 의류, 기프트 카드 등을 좋은 가격으로 찾을 수 있다. 위에서 언급한 세 가지 온라인 장터에서는 정말이지 무엇이든 살 수 있다.

내가 구한 K-pop 희귀 아이템은 대부분 ‘번장’에서 산 것이다. 하지만 내가 앱을 통해 물건을 실제로 사게 되기까지는 시간이 좀 걸렸다. 만약 당신이 필리핀 사람이고 온라인에서 저렴한 상품을 본다면 일단 의심이 들 것이다. 그 이유는 필리핀에서는 온·오프라인 사기꾼이 많기 때문입니다. 하지만 리셀러(reseller·판매자)들이 운영하는 계정에 있는 리뷰를 꼼꼼히 확인한 결과, 나는 앱에서 첫 구매를 하기로 마음먹었다. 그러면서 나는 좋은 리셀러를 찾는 방법을 배웠고 스마트폰도 사는 법까지 배웠다!

나는 좋은 리뷰가 많이 달린 리셀러인 경우 계좌이체 방식으로 물건값을 송금하는 데 동의한다. 계좌이체 방식은 앱을 통한 안전 결제 수단을 사용하는 대신 리셀러의 은행 계좌로 직접 돈을 송금하는 방식이다.

나는 이런 매매 앱으로 하는 쇼핑을 즐기고 있었는데, 2021년 1월 친구를 위해 박스를 뜯지 않은 신품 ‘플레이스테이션 5’를 구매하면서 상황이 달라졌다. 플레이스테이션 5가 공식 매장에서 품절된 바람에 내 친구가 앱을 통해 플레이스테이션 5을 살 수 있는지 알아봐달라고 내게 부탁했다. 여러 리셀러를 검색하다가 합리적인 가격을 제시한 리셀러를 찾았다. 해당 리셀러에게 연락하여 실제 제품 사진을 요청했다. 리셀러는 제품 사진 2장을 내게 보내주며 이 플레이스테이션 5를 재판매하는 이유를 이 제품을 놓고 아내와 싸웠기 때문이라고 밝혔다.

나는 이 리셀러의 계정에 있는 리뷰를 확인하지 않고 즉시 거래를 했다. 40만원을 그의 통장으로 이체했더니 그는 다음날 물건을 보내준다고 했다. 뭔가 이상하다는 생각도 들었지만, 그를 믿기로 했다. 앱을 통한 거래에서 나쁜 경험을 한 적이 없었다는 것이 주된 이유였다. 사실 나는 온라인에서 물건을 살 때 항상 조심스러워서 그 때까지 한 번도 사기를 당한 적이 없었다.

다음 날 나는 리셀러에게 후속 조치를 요청했지만, 그의 번장 계정이 여전히 살아있음에도 그가 이미 채팅방을 떠났다는 것을 알게 됐다. 그가 알려준 휴대전화 번호로 연락을 시도했지만, 더 이상 사용할 수 없는 번호였다. 그가 임시 휴대전화(burner phone) 번호를 쓴 듯했다. 나는 며칠 밖에 안 된 그의 계정을 뒤졌고 리뷰가 한 건도 없다는 것을 알았다.

이쯤 되니 어떻게 해야 할지, 어디에 하소연을 해야 할지 알 수 없었다. 너무 속상해 한국 친구에게 도움을 청했다. 내가 그에게 그간 일어난 일을 말하자 그는 즉시 그 사건을 경찰청 사이버수사대에 신고했다. 사이버수사대 홈페이지에 친구가 10여 쪽 분량의 사고신고서를 썼다. 사건신고서 양식은 한글로 돼 있었는데, 좀 복잡해서 나 같은 외국인이 과연 쉽게 작성할 수 있을지 상상도 잘 안 간다고 친구는 말했다. 그는 사건신고서에 나의 외국인등록증 사본과 함께 제 은행거래 스크린샷과 리셀러와 나눈 대화 화면을 첨부했다.

경찰은 사건에 대한 진전된 수시 상황을 알려주었다. 그러나 8개월 뒤, 경찰은 유감스럽게도 용의자가 이미 해외에 있을 가능성이 있다고 알려왔다. 그러나 한국에서 이런 종류의 사기 사건이 모두 이렇게 끝나는 것은 아니다. 나는 온라인 블로그에서 (다른 사건의) 일부 피해자의 경우 돈을 돌려받았다는 내용을 읽었다. 하지만 사기는 미리 피하고 보는 것이 좋지 않겠는가? 이와 관련하여 온라인 장터에서 사기 피해를 방지하기 위한 몇 가지 팁이 있다.

사기 사건을 신고해야 하는 상황이라면, 직접 경찰서를 방문할 필요는 없습니다. 내 친구가 해준 것처럼 경찰청 사이버수사대 홈페이지를 통해 신고하면 됩니다. 한국어로 읽고 쓸 수 없는, 부산에 거주하는 외국인은 Life in Busan 앱을 통해 번역 도움을 받을 수 있습니다.

I lost 400,000 Korean won to a buy and sell app scam

K-pop albums and official merchandise are rare finds in Philippines 15 years ago. As a second-generation K-pop fan like me, having an access to second-generation K-pop goods is a dream come true. When I first arrived in South Korea, I made a bucket list. One of my bucket lists is to collect all Super Junior albums and merchandise. It means that I need track down all Super Junior goods since their 2005 debut. Sounds crazy, right? But I am up for an adventure.

From different corners of Myeongdong, I discovered the buy and sell app called 번개장터 or Bunjang and Karrot. I was also introduced to Joonggonara in Naver. The three are amazing buy and sell online marketplace especially for someone like me that has basic Korean communication skill. All K-pop goods that I was looking for was there! Beside K-pop items, I also find good deals on gadgets, luxury items, clothes, gift cards and more. Anything that you can think of is available in the three online marketplace that I mentioned.

Most of my K-pop rare finds are from Bunjang app. But it took me a while before I bought something on the app. If you are a Filipino and you see cheap goods online, you will be suspicious. The reason is there are many online and offline scammers in the Philippines. However, after thoroughly checked resellers’ account reviews, I was convinced to do my first purchase on the app. I learned to find a good reseller and even buy a smartphone!

Usually, I agree with bank transfer method especially if the reseller have tons of excellent reviews. The bank transfer method is when you transfer the money directly to the reseller’s bank account and not using the 번개페이 안전결제 or safety payment method that is through the app.

I was enjoying my buy and sell app shopping experience until last year when I bought a sealed PlayStation 5 for a friend. Because PlayStation 5 is sold out in official stores, my friend asked me to find a PlayStation 5 reseller on the app. I found several resellers but only one has a reasonable selling price. I contacted that reseller and asked for the actual product photo. The reseller sent two photos of the product and told me that the reason for reselling the PlayStation 5 is he and his wife fought about it. Without checking the reseller’s account reviews, I immediately closed the deal. I transferred 400,000 Korean won to his bank account and he told me that he will send the item on the next day.

Even I felt that there’s something off, I chose to trust him. Mainly because I never had a bad experience using the app. Actually, I am always careful on buying things online that’s why up to that time, I have never been scammed in my whole life.

On the next day, I asked the reseller for a follow up, only to find out that he already left our chatroom though his Bunjang account is still active. I tried reaching him through the cellphone number that he gave but it is not available anymore. I suspect that he used a burner phone number. I started digging on his account which is only few days old and found out that he doesn’t have any reviews.

At this point, I don’t know what should I do or where should I complain. I was so distraught so, I asked for help from a Korean friend. As soon as I told him what happened, he promptly reported the incident to Korean National Police Agency Cyber Bureau. On the agency’s website, my friend filled up an incident report form that is about 10 pages long.

Besides the form is in Korean, my friend said that the form is a little bit complicated and he could not imagine if a foreigner like me can easily answer it. On the incident report form, he attached the screenshot of my bank transaction and conversation with the reseller together with the copy of my alien registration card.

The police gave updates about the case time to time. But after eight months, the police informed us unfortunately that the suspect is probably already out the country. However, not all fraud cases in Korea end up like mine. I read from online blogs that some victims got their money back. But it is better to avoid being scammed, right? In this regard, here are some tips in order to avoid scam in buy and sell online marketplace.



. Check how many days or months old is the reseller’s account. The older the better.

. Read the reseller’s reviews.

. If you are not using the app’s safe payment method, be sure that you check the cellphone number and bank account of the reseller on Korean National Police Agency Cyber Bureau website.

. As much as possible, use the app’s safe payment method or meet the reseller personally.



If there was any circumstance that you need to report a fraud incident, you don’t need to go personally to the police station. You can report it through Korean National Police Agency Cyber Bureau website like my friend did.
