This citizen reporter came to Korea from Mongolia and has been living here in Korea eleven years.
There are many Mongolian friends who came to Korea from Mongolia to study or work hard and there are many Mongolian acquaintances who want to come to Korea.
This article was written after hearing what a Mongolian friend who has been studying in Korea for three years experienced in person.
The friend unexpectedly encountered a difficult situation and consulted with me and collected detailed related data and evidence.
In the hope that there will be no more similar damage cases, I would like to publicize these cases widely.
Before my friend came to study Korea, he learned Korean language at a Mongolian university and became proficient. went to a Korean company, and experienced Korean culture several times.
Nevertheless, seeing this happen, she felt the need to warn her Mongolian juniors, who had just arrived in Korea and were not good at speaking Korean, to be careful.
At the end of last year, a friend in hometown (Mongolia) asked her to purchase an iPhone 13 pro as a proxy.
After receiving the request, on November 29, 2021, she saw an article saying that the product would be sold at the Daangn Market. At that time, each iphone was about 100,000 won cheaper than the market price, and the seller said he would cut 100,000 won more when she said she would buy two.
However, at that time, the seller said he was on a business trip, so direct transactions were impossible and he insisted on only dealing with courier services. Reluctantly, my friend transferred 2.36 million won(1820 dollar) into the seller¡®s account in several installments.
The seller said that it was sent by courier, took a picture of the tracking number and sent it. Even after several days, the product was not delivered. My friend searched for the tracking number, but could not find it. She called the delivery company to check, and they said there was no such delivery. After confirming this fact, she tried to contact the seller, informed him that she wanted to cancel the transaction, and requested a refund.
But the seller said, ¡°I don¡¯t solve it. The company takes care of it. I can¡¯ t refund 2 million won right away.¡± ¡°If you deposit more money, I will refund you.¡± After that, a KakaoTalk message came under a different name, and it seemed to be the ¡®company¡¯ the seller was talking about. The strange feeling turned into certainty. It was reported to the police on the 6th day after the transaction. She made a statement at the police station once and checked the progress of the case several times. Gathered evidence and related documents were also presented.
The trial in this case was held on June 8, this year. During the trial, the judge informed that ¡°the seller engaged in a similar fraud, totaling about 30 million won.¡± In the end, I did not get my money back and I was scammed for 2,360,000 won.
There are other examples of damage. The friend purchased the mobile phone in installments through an internet dealer (Facebook account) (managed by a Mongolian in Korea). she paid the bill, but the other person¡¯s bill was duplicated in the friend¡¯s account. Embarrassed, she called the telecommunication company and went to the bank. When she checked, the account was automatically debited. I think the dealership did that. When I asked what this was, the dealer said he didn¡¯t know and said that it would never happen again. But the next month, the fee was doubled again. She decided to report it to the police, and then he stopped. She later found out that there were a lot of complaints in the internet community because there were a lot of people who had double payments or suffered damage at the agency, and she heard that the owner of the agency was out of contact.
As an international student who is not on a good budget, I think this happened because they were looking for cheaper ones. Some international students who have suffered from this kind of fraud in Korea are struggling to pay back their money by working part-time.
